The times they are a changin’

Posted under Uncategorized

I was listening to some old Bob Dylan today and listening to “The times they are a changin” led me to think about the 60’s. We really did sense that change was about to happen and that all the protesting and demonstrating was going to have a strong affect. Not you understand, that I was anything other than a boy in the 60’s, but a boy who did care and did take notice of what was happening. And things did change…..Just not enough. The powers that be [I assume be powerful and be always in control] were content to sit back and let us have just enough of the rope to make us think that if we strained enough we could possibly reach the goal. They held their collective breath when they thought that the rope would snap with a few heavyweights such as archbishops and MP’s straining with the great unwashed and walking the road to Aldermarston singing “we shall overcome” But truth be told, the sum did not equal the effort and since we shouted “no more war!” we  had 30 years of Ulster, the Falklands, Bosnia et al, two Gulf wars and Afghanistan, not to mention many viscious wars in Africa, and the middle east which we were not part of at all..honest guv!

The reason for this retrospective is that I have the same sense about now. I feel that the many groups, organisations and individuals campaigning to change are getting thrown little nuggets, but the powers that be are using super strength rope to stop us reaching far enough. We also have as many pro as anti groups to contend with. Pro smoking groups funded by…erm [does anyone from BAT read this?] Pro hunting, pro guns, pro drugs. Sadly the anti groups who hold the moral high ground, keep shooting themselves in the foot by crossing the line that we know should not be crossed. Anti vivisectionists destroying  homes and cars of workers. Anti fur trade protestors releasing the farmed mink in Ringwood which almost caused an environmental disaster. I want to see these things stopped, but I want it done in a way that any victory is a grand victory.

I asked myself the question “If you knew that any action you take would lead to nothing, what would you do” The answer is that I would still do it. I need my children and grandchildren to see that doing nothing is not an option. We might fail this time round to get any serious change in our protestations, we might be lucky and win a series of small battles, but we need to keep trying to inspire the following generations to fight for change.

(I tried to not be specific about the causes I believe in so that this post can be read as a general rant)

I have a sense of dis-ease tonight.

I started off by watching a program about a millionaire who went to Salford incognito and gave lots of money to needy causes. That should have uplifted me, but it left me feeling sad that in this day and age there are so very many people in desperate need of help and so few people ready to give the help the need.

Next was the sad post by a good chum which left me feeling again sad.

Tomorrow I will work the market in Stamford before firing up the Mer-torhome and heading down to Sandy to await the arrival on Saturday of the Grockles. The Grockles are Omally, Hi-tek and Pharisee, otherwise known as Neil, Keith and John, who with me limping along, form a formidable team of Geocachers. We started spending weekends caching several years ago and have done the Isle of Wight twice, Oxfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, Hampshire and now again Beds. There have been a couple of times when the Merman has been absent due to physical and mental issues, but even though I am recently recovered from a knee op, I feel that I need the catharsis of good honest chums, a walk in the fresh air and a couple of drinks too many afterwards.

I have a lot of catching up to do with the Grockles and am thrilled to be spending this time with the lads.

Love and Peace

Can you tell what it is yet?

Posted under Uncategorized

Hooray for crappy pieces of electronic junk and nostalgia all rolled into one tiny but perfectly formed package.

http://arts.independent.co.uk/music/news/article2964459.ece

The Stylophone© is back:) It now comes with volume control and mp3 imput, but it is still the little box of whine that I loved as a boy. My brother and I shared one, which equated to it being mine. If my brother had claimed it, he would probably still own it today and still have the box and original batteries (You need to know my brother) I on the other hand broke it or lost it or lent it, but it was no big deal at the time. Now on the other hand I want one and will play it all the time…. for at least twenty minutes before putting it in a drawer till the batteries melt.

(I also want an old fashioned led black and red calculator)

Love and peace

Fnar Fnar!

I have just finished watching “Autumn Watch” on beeb 2 with Bill Oddie and Kate Humble. Along with all the spectacular film of wildlife, were two superb laugh out loud double entendres. First place to”I must interupt you there Bill, we are going over for some live Beaver action” was the quip from Kate.  Second place went to ”And now for what we are calling  the Snatch of the day” (Kate again)

Small things amuse small minds.

Peace

Fridge cold..heater hot…check!

Posted under Uncategorized

I put the fridge on to test it on Tuesday and returned today to turn it off, which was not necessary as I had not lit it in the first place. I checked the instructions that the dealer gave me, translated into English and it appears I have a later fridge with the control knob opposite to the instruction book, so full on was in fact full off! All sorted now and the fridge is cooling like a good un’.

The heater is a piece of cake to light and I had that roaring in no time flat. I say roaring, but in fairness, the pump is very quiet and there is a gentle hum as the air is circulated.

Love and Peace
